There is malware connected to this recent upload:
http://archive.org/details/ZontarTheThingFromVenus1966

If you try to play the file, you will be directed to download a new audio codec, and the installation process will force malware onto your computer that is very difficult to remove. I added a review stating this to the page, but it was removed by the uploader. Please be careful with the avi file. I suspect that the h.264 and ogg files will not generate from this avi file because of its design.

I don't think a .AVI file can hold or act or direct your Media Player to download a Codec. Only your Media Player can initiate a download of a Codec, and when it does, it downloads it from its own website, such as, if your running Windows Media Player, Windows Media Player will download the needed Codec from its own website which is Microsoft.com.

You might try VLC Media Player, it has all codecs already installed. You can download it for free at videolan.org

Thanks, you are correct . . . I must have been half asleep. When trying to install the correct audio codec, I clicked on a google paid ad for downloadster.org - which is a vlc player download site - but not the *real* vlc download site, that you provided the link to. It installed persistent ad software in my browsers from funmoods.com that I am having trouble removing, even with the revo uninstaller. I got it out of chrome and IE, but not firefox yet.

sigh

I'm not an expert on computers, but you could try, restoring your computer to an earlier date. You can access this function (on Windows) by clicking on the START button at the bottom of your "Desktop" and clicking on "Help and Support" and then clicking on "Undo Changes to your Computer with "System Restore". Make sure you choose a date that is before you downloaded the Media Player thats giving you problems.

That might work.

Good Luck!

I had that same problem. On your computer, do a system restore that restores your computer to an earlier time.

I restored to a date two weeks earlier, which brought back my virus program that the malware had removed, but the ad-ware is still in firefox - I used to prefer firefox, but am finding chrome and IE easier to use . . . and the pesky adware seems to have been removed from them. Thanks for the help.
